In some respects, I’m old school. If you have a genuine desire to express yourself through art, the best I can do to help you is to focus on the basics that have stood the test of hundreds of years of art instruction.
The more you master the skill of drawing and accurate rendering, the stronger your work will become.
The more you study and practice sound composition, the stronger your work will become.
The more you study and practice colour theory, the stronger your work will become.
The more you study and master the technical procedures appropriate to the medium you are using, yes, the stronger your work will become.
And one final element. The more you invest time and effort and love into your art, the stronger your work will become.
That said, some students who come to me merely want to get better at a pleasant weekend hobby while others seriously hope to evolve their work to a level that allows them to vocate as an artist. I am happy to work with both sets of aspirations. At the end of the day, it is my hope that at the very least I will have deepened your understanding of and appreciation for Art.
